Maybe it was the way a cigarette hung from the soldier’s lips, or his dazed stare. Maybe it was his leisurely stance amid chaos. Reasons aside, the image — taken in France’s Vosges Mountains about a month before the Battle of the Bulge — was one Rubin could not forget.
