We all know that a simple haircut can make a world of difference when it comes to grooming. But for one severely neglected dog, a makeover meant much more than just looking good. It meant a second chance at life.
The South Plains SPCA recently encountered what they describe as the “worst case of dog neglect.” A 6-year-old dog, named Matt after his matted fur, was found covered in extremely tangled and thick fur, and in poor health. His hair growth had been left unattended for about five years, leading to severe matting.
According to Kim Moyers, president of the South Plains SPCA, it was shocking that Matt had gone unnoticed for so long. His condition was so extreme that his hair had grown into his skin, causing pain and discomfort. The poor dog had even become entangled in a collar and leash embedded in his fur.
Determined to give Matt the care he desperately needed, the SPCA took him in and set out on a mission to transform his life. After sedating him to alleviate pain, they proceeded to carefully shave off a staggering three pounds of matted fur. As they worked, they uncovered thousands of foreign objects, such as sticks, grass, beetles, and even goathead stickers, tangled in his fur. It was evident that Matt had been living in unimaginable conditions.
Despite the long road to recovery that lay ahead, Matt’s transformation was already remarkable. After a professional groomer, who also happens to be an SPCA foster, worked their magic, the dog looked completely different. Houston, an SPCA representative, described Matt as the “most gorgeous-looking dog” she had ever seen.
Not only did Matt’s physical appearance change, but his behavior also improved. Waking up from his grooming session, he revealed his sweet and affectionate nature. He enjoyed his very first walk in years, wagging his tail and expressing pure joy. Matt was finally getting a taste of the happy, normal life he deserved.
Currently under the care of Tori Houston, Matt will soon be available for adoption once he has fully recovered. It’s heart-wrenching to think about the years of neglect Matt endured, but we are grateful that he is now safe, groomed, and ready for a new beginning.
