‘Scooby-Doo’s Velma Confirmed To Be LGBT+ In Newest Movie

It’s always awesome to see more and more representation for marginalized communities in the media! While longtime fans of the Scooby-Doo franchise know that creators have been attempting to portray Velma as LGBT+ for quite some time, some fans are surprised to see that in the latest Scooby-Doo film that just came out, this has finally been confirmed within the show itself.

Way back in 2001, director James Gunn attempted to portray Velma as a lesbian in the live-action ‘Scooby Doo’ movie, but faced pushback.

“In 2001 Velma was explicitly gay in my initial script,” Gunn revealed in 2020 . “But the studio just kept watering it down & watering it down, becoming ambiguous (the version shot), then nothing (the released version) & finally having a boyfriend (the sequel).”

In the cartoon series ‘Mystery Incorporated,’ which ran from 2010 to 2013, producer Tony Cervone also intended Velma to be a lesbian in that series.

“We made our intentions as clear as we could ten years ago. Most of our fans got it. To those that didn’t, I suggest you look closer. There’s no new news here,” Cervone wrote on Instagram alongside an image of Velma with another character Marcie in front of a rainbow flag with the word PRIDE on it.

In the latest film, ‘Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo!’ Velma’s sexuality seems to finally be confirmed.

In a clip shared to Twitter, Velma meets a character named Coco Diablo, who is described as “obviously brilliant,” with “incredible glasses” and “an amazing turtleneck,” and becomes overwhelmed, blushing furiously as her glasses fog up as romantic music swells. “Jinkies!” she exclaims.

Another clip has been shared where Coco places her hand on Velma’s shoulder and calls her cute, to which Velma gets adorably flustered.

Many fans are ecstatic to finally have this facet of Velma’s character confirmed, with one fan writing , “They just showed what everyone knew for decades,” and another adding , “I feel like this news is like saying grass is green, sky is blue. Everyone who can see knows this!”
